History and Culture

Sardinia has plenty of archaeological sites, witness of history dating back over 4,000 years.

The “Houses of Fairies”, Menhirs, “Giants’ tombs” and over 7000 Nuraghi are the present evidence of a glorious past.

Learn about the history and culture of Sardinia, dating back over 4,000 years, through medieval times to the present day. Many of our tours and hikes can incorporate visits to historical sites, such as our Discover Tortolì and Discover Ogliastra tours. As you walk, cycle or drive around our varied landscape you will discover some of the oldest traditions, superstitions and hidden treasures.

For those who want to delve deep into our fascinating history we can design a special tour to suit your needs or you can join one of our regular tours from May to October.

All year round there are events happening in and around Tortolì, usually at the weekends, which increase in frequency during summer and autumn. During these events you will see traditional dress, dancing and singing.  Traditional foods are made and sold from courtyards and street stalls.  You may even be lucky enough to be the recipient of Sardinian generosity (which is plentiful when they see a smile and decide you are an “amigu” or friend).

If you can speak Italian (or even better some Sardinian), you might enjoy spending the day alone, navigating the winding streets and discovering the exhibitions, demonstrations and performances.  However, if you haven’t yet mastered the language you might consider going along with a guide.  You can then really discover the true meaning behind the traditions and get the most out of your visit.

We can build visits to historical sites, festivals, cultural events or even vineyards into your itinerary to suit any level of fitness.
